ToggleIntroduction
As winter begins, you notice that the haze in the atmosphere begins to increase. This is actually caused by pollution. The later haze is caused by winter. But the primary role in the initial haze is pollution. And when this pollution begins, whether it’s due to stubble burning or firecrackers, you’ll repeatedly read in newspapers or news reports that the air quality index has deteriorated. The air quality index has teriorated, and a number is assigned to it. You read this repeatedly. So, what is this AI?
What is Aqi?
The full form of AQI is Air Quality Index. So, this Air Quality Index is a number assigned to the air. This number tells us how clean or polluted our air is. This number basically ranges from zero to 500.
How is AQI measured?
To measure it, we consider some major pollutants. There are many pollutants, but the main ones are considered within this. For example, PM 10, PM 2.5, or O3.
What is PM?
Two main pollutants are pm10 and pm2.5. What are pm10 and pm2.5?
The number 10 given here means dust particles or pollutants whose size is 10 micrometers.
Now you have to understand what is the size of 1 micrometer? So, to understand the size of 1 micrometer, you can assume that your
The normal scale is 15 cm, and within that 15 cm… There are 10 divisions of every centimeter. Meaning, 1 cm is divided into 10 parts. So, that one part out of those 10 is called 1 mm. If we divide that 1 mm by 1000, then it will be called 1 micrometer.
If we say 10 micrometers for such a small dust particle, then 100th part of that 1 millimeter means that the particle is so small that it cannot be seen with the naked eye. Although Particulate Matter 10, when it is collectively seen flying like dust particles etc., is still visible to the naked eye, but PM 2.5 cannot be seen at all with the naked eye. PM 10 will only affect your lungs, but PM 2.5, as soon as it enters your body through breathing, can also enter your bloodstream, which can make the situation even more serious. Therefore, we should use masks in such situations.
Ozone layer: While the layer of O3 (the ozone layer) in the upper part of our atmosphere protects us from ultraviolet rays, if this O3 gets mixed in our air, it acts as a poison. O3 is not good for breathing, although it protects us from ultraviolet rays. Similarly, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide are the main pollutants in our atmosphere. Based on their concentration, the QI is determined. If the concentration of these pollutants is very high, then the QI is very high.
As the number of A and Y increases, it means that our air is more polluted.
Based on all this, a number is assigned to the air, and that number ranges from zero to 500.
Formula
AQI={(Ihigh-Ilow)/(Chigh-Clow)}{C – Clow} + Ilow
C → Measured concentration of that pollutant
C_low → Lower limit of the concentration range
C_high → Upper limit of the concentration range
I_low → Lower limit of the AQI index
I_high → Upper limit of the AQI index
In this, the index is calculated based on concentration.
The concentration range and AQI range are different for each pollutant.
Example Calculation (PM2.5)
Let’s say the value of PM2.5 = 85 µg/m³.
Breakpoint table for PM2.5 (US-EPA):
AQI Range PM2.5 µg/m³
51-100 12.1-35.4
101-150 35.5-55.4
151-200 55.5-150.4
85 falls in this range: 55.5-150.4 → AQI 151-200
So:
C = 85
C_low = 55.5
C_high = 150.4
I_low = 151
I_high = 200
Now the formula Apply:
So AQI ≈ 166 (Very Unhealthy for sensitive groups)
Important Note
AQI is always rounded to the nearest integer.
The Total AQI is not the AQI of a single pollutant, but the worst AQI among six pollutants.
This means the pollutant with the highest AQI is the Final AQI.
Now let’s see what the air condition is between 0 and 500.
First, let’s talk about the range between 0 and 500. Look, it can’t be zero.
An AQI number between zero and 50 means the air is clean. You can breathe that air without fear. You can roam anywhere. You can go anywhere freely. But as the number increases, the situation starts to become a little serious. If the number is 50 to 100, you can still consider the air clean. There may be some minor problems. There are some highly sensitive people who have problems with even a little dust in the air. So they should use masks and such. Normal people don’t face any problems inside. However, when the air quality index starts to rise above 100, problems begin. If the AQI is between 100 and 200, then people with asthma, heart problems, or lung problems start to experience problems. Even normal people may experience some discomfort, such as a sore throat or other minor problems. But if the AQI rises above 200, the situation becomes very serious. Between 200 and 300, we assume that the air quality has deteriorated significantly. So, if your AQI is above 200, you should use a mask when going out.
Now, when does the situation become extremely serious?
When the AQI rises above 300, understand that the air is absolutely unfit for breathing.
What we do in this situation?
In such a situation, you should only leave the house when absolutely necessary. Otherwise, stay at home. And whenever you go out, use an N95 mask
or a pollution mask.
So, as soon as our Air Quality Index reaches above 300, the situation begins to become serious. So what should you do? In such a situation, you can plant purifying plants at home. That means, there are plants in small pots that can purify the air.
And also, in such a situation, consume a little more water. That will also help you in dealing with such a situation.
Because of this, your lungs will remain slightly hydrated.
